What "AI visibility" means and why traditional SEO doesn't cover it
AI visibility is whether AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity — actually name your business when someone asks for a recommendation in your category. Traditional SEO measures whether you rank on a search results page; AI visibility measures whether you get mentioned in a generated answer, which is a fundamentally different mechanism with different inputs.
The deeper picture
Good SEO can help AI visibility indirectly (a well-structured, accurate, frequently-cited website is good for both), but ranking #1 on Google doesn't guarantee an AI assistant will name you, and being invisible to Google Maps doesn't necessarily mean you're invisible to ChatGPT. They're related but separate battles, and most businesses are only tracking one of them.
Where this leads
This is the gap the whole AI Visibility Audit toolkit exists to close — treating "does AI recommend me" as its own measurable, trackable thing, not an assumption based on your Google ranking.
